The founders of popular technology website AllThingsD have launched a new digital news and review website after parting ways with Dow Jones back in September.

The site, Re/code, was announced on Thursday by co-founders Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg. The site and conference, which will be called Code, are to be managed by Revere Digital LLC, which received investments from the NBCUniversal News Group as well as Windsor Media, founded by former Yahoo chairman and CEO Terry Semel. The first conference under the new company will be held in late May outside Los Angeles.

“Just like the industries we cover, we think this is a good moment to rethink ourselves and make changes without sacrificing everything that has been our calling card,” said Mossberg, a long-time reviewer who penned a Wall Street Journal technology column for more than two decades.

While Semel and NBCUniversal have not disclosed the amounts of their investments in the new company, Swisher and Mossberg said they would retain a majority control in the new venture.

“We’re still very firmly of the belief that no matter how the medium changes, consumers want really accurate tech reviews, tech analysis, tech news,” said Swisher, who co-edited AllThingsD and has written extensively about tech for the Journal and other publications. “We think we’ve done that very well across the last 11 years and we’re going to continue and expand it.”

Mossberg and Swisher’s investment deal with NBCUniversal includes a collaboration agreement across properties including CNBC, NBC News and MSNBC.

“I think we’re all going to be enriched for having the content partnership with them,” said Patricia Fili-Krushel, chairman of the NBCUniversal News Group.

“They have a great opportunity with the help and support that they’ll be receiving from NBC,” Semel said. “I think it’s a very good marriage.”

Mossberg and Swisher will take with them 18 current full-time employees and plan to hire for an unspecified number of new editorial and business positions, with plans to take on more long-form stories while continuing to break news and write reviews. They hired Reuters and Financial Times veteran Kenneth Li to serve as managing editor for Recode.net.

“Because this is a new, independent company with new investors and partners, we will be able to expand and rethink how we cover tech and media,” Mossberg said. “We also wanted partners who could advise us and help us, and in the case of NBC, give us new platforms.”

On Wednesday, Dow Jones' Wall Street Journal launched its new tech platform, called WSJDThe newspaper's new site will feature technology news as well as reviews and opinion pieces, according to an announcement from Jonathan Krim, the Journal's global technology editor.
