Insurance companies take a lot into account when they decide how much to charge you for car insurance.

But no matter how great your driving record, expect to pay a lot more in Michigan.

Drivers there pay 136 percent – more than double – the national average, according to data from insuranceQuotes.com. North Carolina drivers get the best deal, paying 41 percent less than the national average.

"Michigan is the only state where car insurance includes unlimited lifetime personal injury protection, so that's a major reason why car insurance is so expensive in Michigan," said Laura Adams, insuranceQuotes.com's senior analyst. "Michigan (also) has an unusually high number of uninsured drivers, which drives up rates for people who do have car insurance."

In Detroit, as many as half of all car owners don't have insurance, which is one reason drivers who do buy coverage in Wayne County pay 45 percent more than the statewide average.

North Carolina's average rates are lowest in part due to strict state regulations and a high-risk pool that serves as an insurer of last resort, according to Adams.
