For sale: $6.5 million
Ty Cobb's hunting and fishing retreat on Lake Tahoe is on the market for $6.5 million.
When Ty Cobb bought the land along the shores of Lake Tahoe, the area was more remote. The baseball great's new place was a hunting and fishing retreat and rather rustic, which is exactly how he preferred it.
“The family used to sleep in tents when they came to visit,” explained listing agent David Cloutier of Coldwell Banker. “Cobb’s granddaughter remembers going out to pick up spring water or taking the boat to pick up mail.”
Cobb died in 1961, but the family held onto the home and kept it largely as is, until 1992, when his grandchildren expanded and renovated the little fishing lodge.

“They kept the interior with the knotty pine, but they expanded the kitchen [and] brought in modern appliances,” said Cloutier. “The fireplace is the original fireplace, which was carved out of native stone.”
Certain mementos from the home, including a clock, were given to the Hall of Fame.
The house sits on 2.2 acres — a good sized parcel for Tahoe — and while it’s not completely isolated, it’s a deep enough lot, says Cloutier, that the home feels private. Because of the size of the parcel, there is an opportunity for the next owner to develop a larger family compound, or isolate the lakefront parcel where the house sits now and split the lot.
Measuring 2,438 square feet, the house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. A spacious deck leading from the living area leads to landscaped grounds and the lakefront deck.
The house is a throwback, says Cloutier, a reminder of earlier times, before Tahoe was in its heyday.

“The family retained that warmth — that under-the-blankets, under-the-fire type of feeling. It’s the character of the residence that stands out the most,” he said.
The estimated mortgage on this residence would be $25,779 a month, according to Zillow’s mortgage calculator and assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year-mortgage.
