About 1 million bikes from Trek Bicycle Corp. are being recalled after three riders were injured, including one who became paralyzed.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall covers 900,000 bicycles sold in the U.S. and 98,000 in Canada. An open quick release lever on the front wheel hub of the bicycles, manufactured in Taiwan and China, can get caught in the disc brake, causing the bicycle to stop suddenly.

Trek has reported three incidents with the bikes, all of which caused injuries and one of which caused quadriplegia, the CPSC said in a statement.

"This recall involves all models of Trek bicycles from model years 2000 through 2015 equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel hub that opens far enough to contact the disc brake," the CPSC statement said. It said that people should stop riding the bikes immediately and bring them back to their dealer who will replace the quick release mechanism for free.
