It’s June, which means the days are getting longer — and so are some of the sales.
With Father’s Day coming up on June 19, tons of dad-friendly sales are in the air. And for those summer weddings, items like glass- and dinnerware are on marked down. But there's also savings on tons more to be had this month.
Here's our roundup of some of the best deals, plus some tips from retail experts.
Tools
“If you’re looking to buy tools, especially power tools, cordless tool kits, tool storage, and automotive tools, there may be no better time than Father’s Day,” said Brent Shelton, online shopping expert at Fat Wallet.
Over at Sears, check out the Craftsman 311-pc. Mechanic tool set on sale for $199.99, down from $399.99 through June 4, a Sears spokesperson said. From June 5 through June 11, save up to 30 percent off Craftsman Tools over $50, and 50 percent on the Craftsman 230-pc. Mechanic’s Tool Set, which is selling for $99.99, down from $199.99
From June 15 through June 20, go to Lowe’s to get a Kobalt 24-Volt Max Lithium Ion ½-in. Brushless Cordless Drill with Soft Case for $149, down from $179, Tara Gudger, a Lowe’s spokesperson said. Also see the DEWALT 20-Volt MAX ½-in. Lithium Ion Crodless Drill/Driver with Soft Case for $99, down from $149; and the Kobalt 40-Volt 2.0-Amps Rechargeable Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Cordless Power Equipment Battery for $49, down from $99.
Lawn care equipment
The pressure is on to get that lawn in prime condition for summer picnics, and retailers are here to motivate you with low prices.
At Lowes, from June 2 through June 6, get the Troy-Bilt TB240 160-cc 21-in Self-Propelled Front Wheel Drive 3-in-1 Gas Lawn Mower with Mulching Capability for $299, down from $329, Gudger confirmed. Also, find the Kobalt 80-Volt Max 16-in Straight Brushless Cordless String Trimmer for $199, down from $249. From June 15 through June 20, the Kobalt 40-Volt Max 12-in Straight Cordless String Trimmer and Edger is marked down from $169 to $129; and the Kobalt 40-Volt Lithium Ion (Li-ion) 250-CFM 140-MPH Light-Duty Cordless Electric Leaf Blower regularly $149 is $129.
At Sears, the Craftsman Quiet Front Wheel Drive Mower with Just Check & Add is on sale from June 5 through June 11 for $339.99, down from $419.99, the spokesperson said, and the Craftsman 27CC Gas Trimmer is on sale for $149.99, reduced from $194.99.
Dinnerware
“With wedding season in full swing, you're likely to get a good deal on typical registry items, like kitchen accessories, home décor and dining ware. Last June, we saw great deals from Macys and more,” said Sara Skirboll, shopping expert at RetailMeNot.
At Macy’s, get 40 percent off dinnerware, serveware, and glassware from The Cellar, said Macy’s spokesperson Tracy Davis. Check out the Fiesta 4-Piece Place Setting, marked down from $56 to $29.99; and theAll-Clad Stainless Steel 5-Piece BBQ Set, regularly priced at $179, for $119.99. The sale runs June 1 through June 8.
Lingerie
“If you’re looking for something a little spicy to wear under that new summer outfit, this is the month to do it,” said RetailMeNot shopping expert Skirboll. “The massively popular Victoria’s Secret’s semi-annual sale kicks off in June, and the discounts typically get deeper each week the sale goes on.”
Kendal Perez, savings experts with CouponSherpa, added that other retailers including Target, Sears, and Aerie seize the momentum created by Victoria’s Secret and usher in their own deals.
“In previous years, Target has offered [buy one, get one free] on bras and six-packs of underwear for $20, and Sears took off up to 80 percent on select undergarments, while Aerie off up to 50 percent off its lingerie,” Perez said.
Save up to 40 percent off of lingerie at Nordstrom from now through June 5.
Clothing and swimwear
June is traditionally a great time to buy designer clothing, with Skirboll noting that "sales from top designer clothing retailers like Calvin Klein and Coach are common in June, and discounts are as deep as an extra 40 percent off sale items." But this summer we may be seeing even bigger savings across all types of retail apparel due to lackluster sales earlier this year.
A recent report by analytics firm Dynamic Action showed that retailers sold 4 percent fewer items at full price in the first quarter of 2016 than they did in 2015. Much of what didn't sell is now on sale or clearance. Check out the massive clearance sale over at Kohl's, which features up to 80 percent off select clothing items, and another rock-bottom clearance at JC Penney.
Despite the need to move leftover inventory, retailers will also be catering to seasonal demand by offering discounts on swimwear.
"We’ve already seen 60 percent off swimsuit sales start before Victoria's Secret's Semi-Annual Sale," said Courtney Jespersen, retail expert at NerdWallet, who pointed to the 30 to 40 percent off select junior's swim style sale at J.C. Penney, and the 50 percent off sale of Aerie swim at American Eagle Outfitters.
Movie tickets
“Expect low-priced tickets for children’s flicks, [which] are a great way to keep kids busy while they’re out of school for the summer,” said Jespersen.
Cinemark’s Summer Movie Clubhouse features 10 fun films for kids at $5 for 10 movies, when purchased in advance, or $1 per show when purchased at the box office; Harkins Theatres has 10 movies for kids in 10 weeks, and Regal Entertainment Group is hosting the Summer Movie Express 2016, featuring $1 movies all summer long.
Donuts
Don't forget that National Donut Day is June 3. Find offers from Krispy Kreme, which is giving out a free doughnut of any variety that day, no purchase necessary, and from LaMar's, which will give out a free doughnut when you print and present a golden ticket. Dunkin' Donuts is handing out a free classic doughnut with purchase of any beverage, and even Entenmann's is in on the action with its National Donut Day sweepstakes for a chance to win free donuts for a year, plus every entry donates $1 to the Salvation Army USA (up to $35,000).
