A Nebraska home that's anything but traditional

5550 McKinley St, Omaha NE
For sale: $995,000

"It's not your typical Nebraska home," said Omaha real estate agentKaren Jennings.

One glance at the modern house and it's apparent Jennings is right. Cantilevered over a wooded lot, with enormous windows and a glass bridge, the residence is not what you would find in most suburbs.

But that's exactly the appeal of the house, Jennings says. And she believes it's a home that more buyers are looking for.

"The Midwest trends traditional, but more and more people are craving eco-friendly, modern homes. The spacing is great, the lighting and the clean lines — there's less clutter."

The original home still sits on the property and is currently used as a studio space, connected to the main house by a glass bridge. The current homeowner designed and built the Omaha home himself in 2007. Intertwining natural and man-made elements, the house has many green features, including natural ventilation, a passive solar energy system, insulated concrete walls and radiant flooring. The living room, called the cube or gallery, has enormous windows. A set of rear staircases leads to the four stories: One floor contains the master suite and a spare bedroom, and another floor holds childrens' bedrooms, hidden behind a wooden slate installation.

No trees were removed when the home was constructed, explains Jennings, which adds to the home's overall natural feel.

"You are immersed in the trees," she said. "You really feel like you're in a retreat, like you're living within nature."

According to Zillow's mortgage calculator, a monthly payment on the home would be $3,451, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage.
