Bill Graham's legendary concerts — featuring some of the biggest rock artists of the '60s and '70s, including The Who, the Rolling Stone, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane — were most often held in the Bay Area. However, the concert promoter also brought the Grateful Dead to Telluride, Colo., shortly after he purchased a rustic home there.

The house — a sprawling retreat on 7.5 continuous lots — was built in the 1970s, and Graham bought it in the 1980s, says current owner and actress Sandra Carradine. She and her former husband, actor and songwriter Keith Carradine, bought the home from Graham’s estate after he died.

"I knew the house, and I knew Bill really well," Carradine explained. "We saved the Sheridan Opera House from demolition, and he was helping me with that, that year before he died."

When the Carradines bought the home, they also purchased many of Graham's accessories and memorabilia — items that Carradine believes should stay in the house.

"The black leather sofa that is in the living room is Bill Graham’s sofa that he personally designed," she said. "I call it the Bill Graham Grateful Dead sofa."

The home features 6,000 square feet of living space.

The Carradines bought the home as a retreat and raised their kids there. But now they're grown, and Sandra Carradine says with producing and acting projects, it makes sense to be based in L.A. or New York, even though she gushes about the property and Telluride in general.

"As soon as I hit Telluride, it just swells you over," she said. "It’s just this most magical place."

The home is quite magical as well, with 6,000 square feet of living space and a 1,500-square-foot deck overlooking the creek that winds through the property.

Even in the dead of winter, the home is light-filled, with high ceilings and comfortable living areas, says Carradine. Surrounded by trees, the home feels private, yet it’s only minutes from downtown Telluride. Ski slopes are a short walk away.

"It really just sounds silly, but it must just be a foundation of the home — it’s just a well-built home," she said. "You walk in, and you just feel so cozy."
