Thousands of JetBlue passengers were delayed by a systemwide computer outage that snarled the check-in process at several airports Monday, the airline said.

Long lines built up at locations including Boston Logan, Washington National, Tampa and Orlando as passengers were issued with handwritten boarding passes.

Several flights were delayed by the chaos, which the airline said was "a widespread system outage" that had been fixed but was still causing delays.

JetBlue did not immediately provide further details.

Matt Cleinman, who was supposed to take off from Boston at 6.20 a.m. bound for Pittsburgh, was still waiting to check in at 7 a.m. at Logan's Terminal C.

“I'd expect major delays to ripple through their day,” he told NBC News, saying the “major backlog” was causing “crazy lines” even though some flights were now departing.

Another passenger, Ryan Ludick waited over an hour in line to check-in manually at Washington Reagan/National airport.

At Fort Lauderdale, customer Maurice Pereira said the check-in line was "out the door" but that the airline was "handling things well."
