Yes, that's Johnny Depp as Tonto in the upcoming "Lone Ranger" film, which won't hit theaters until 2013. (That's Armie Hammer, best known for playing the Winklevii in "The Social Network," as the Masked Man.)
Depp's makeup was the talk of movie blogs after the photo was released on Thursday.
"It looks like Depp is side-stepping the whole problem of being a white man playing a Native American by painting his face stark white with black stripes, making this feel more like the child of Edward Scissorhands and Captain Jack Sparrow on a trip to the Old West than anything resembling the old TV serial," wrote Katey Rich at Cinema Blend.
It was Depp's headgear that interested the blogger at I Watch Stuff, who wrote "Depp wears a bird as a hat! Because he's Tonto, and he wanted to make sure he looked slightly wackier than Mel Gibson's Native American getup from 'Maverick.'"
Depp also wears white facial makeup in his role as vampire Barnabas Collins in "Dark Shadows," which comes out in May.
