COLD CASE SPOTLIGHT: Jessica Starr

The night of August 8th, 2011, Jessica Starr was beaten, stabbed, and left to die in the backyard of her Elkhart County, Indiana home.

The night of August 8th, 2011, Jessica Starr was beaten, stabbed, and left to die in the backyard of her Elkhart County, Indiana home.

"It feels like three years and then some. She was my little shadow," Frank Starr, Jessica's older brother, told NBC affiliate WNDU in August 2013.

Officials said Starr had just arrived home from work around 11:00 pm that night when the attack began at her car. Jessica’s roommate was in the home they shared and she along with several neighbors said they heard Jessica screaming and immediately called 911. When help arrived, Jessica was already dead. Police believe Jessica was targeted and knew her attacker. The light bulb on her front porch had been unscrewed and investigators believe the perpetrator was waiting in the darkness for Jessica when she got home.

Jessica was also the victim of a brutal home invasion in 2001, but friends and family said she used the experience to relate, and reach out, to other victims in her work as a victim's liaison for the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office.

"She would take out photos of her battered body and say, 'I know exactly what you're talking about,' in order to help them," Lt. Cindy Kilgore from the Michiana Crime Stoppers told WNDU.

According to WNDU, several possible suspects were identified and brought in for questioning, but no arrests have been made in the case. There is currently a $1,000 reward offered through Crime Stoppers for information that could help in Jessica's case.
