An ice-skating trip at a pond ended tragically Friday when a young girl fell through the ice and her father fell in trying to save her. Authorities searching with divers and boats recovered their bodies.

Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department reported that a 44-year old father had gone ice-skating on the pond with his daughters, ages 9 and 6.

The 9-year old daughter fell through the ice, and the father tried to rescue her. Meanwhile, the 6-year old daughter ran to a nearby home to get help. When she returned to the pond with sheriff's department deputies, they found the father and other daughter missing.

Rescuers chopped through the ice and searched the pond by small boat Friday afternoon, when snow was falling and the temperature was 22 degrees. The bodies of father and daughter were discovered shortly afterwards.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
