The government said Tuesday it had opened investigations into problems with the brake lights on two General Motors’ Corp. pickup trucks and the windshield wiper arm on the Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site that it was looking into complaints of the brake lamp switch failing in models of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The problem could prevent the brake lamp from lighting.

NHTSA estimated there are about 164,000 models of the pickup trucks from the 2005 model year. GM spokesman Alan Adler said it was cooperating in the preliminary investigation.

In the Volvo SUV probe, the government said a retaining nut on the windshield wiper arm may become loose and potentially prevent the wiper blade from working.

In May 2005, Volvo advised dealers about the loosening of the retaining nut during extreme winter weather. It instructed dealers to properly tighten the nut on the shaft where the wiper blade pivots.

About 88,000 models of the XC90 from the 2004-2005 model years are involved in the review.

Volvo spokesman Dan Johnston said the automaker was cooperating with investigators.

There have been no reports of crashes or injuries associated with the two investigations.
