A 4-year-old girl was killed and three other people were shot inside a Brooklyn apartment Sunday, police said. A man in the apartment was taken into custody.

The girl was shot and pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital after the shootings in a fourth-floor apartment in the East New York section of Brooklyn, police said.

A woman in her 50s was shot in the head and a 14-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man were each shot in the leg, police said. Their names and relationship to one other weren’t immediately known.

Another man, who lived in the apartment, hurt his hand while trying to subdue the suspect, police said. The suspect was taken to a hospital after hitting his head on a fish tank in the apartment, police said.

Neighbors at the Unity Plaza Long Island Baptist House were startled to hear the gunfire at around 11:30 a.m. Carmen Perez, 33, who lives a block away, said she saw the suspect celebrating his birthday on Saturday outside the apartment building.

“Everybody was celebrating. Everybody was enjoying themselves,” Perez said.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the shootings.
