British police on Friday charged a 27-year-old man in connection with a failed attempt to bomb London's transit system last July.

Muhedin Ali was charged with helping one of the alleged July 21 bombers, Hussein Osman, evade arrest.

He is the 17th person charged over the attacks.

Ali was due to appear at London's Bow Street Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Osman and three other men -- Muktar Said Ibrahim, 28; Ramzi Mohamed, 24 and Yassin Omar, 25 -- are accused of plotting to bomb three subway trains and a bus on July 21, two weeks after four other bombers killed 52 people and themselves, also aboard three London Underground trains and a double-decker bus.

The July 21 plot failed because the bombs failed to detonate.
