At least 12 people were killed late Monday when a bus loaded with tourists from Turkey ran off the road and crashed into a ravine, police said.

The bus was carrying about 30 people, some of whom suffered serious injuries, police said. The tourists were returning to their hotel after dining out when the bus crashed shortly after 11 p.m.

The ANSA news agency said four people were injured critically, including the Italian bus driver.

The bus reportedly was one of eight carrying a total of about 350 people — all of them Ford auto dealers from Turkey.

A dispatcher at the Rome police headquarters, who said he was not authorized to release his name, said the bus fell about 65 feet into the yard of a private home in northwestern Rome.

He said rescue workers had freed some of the tourists who were trapped in the mangled metal and were transporting them to area hospitals.
