The man convicted of kidnapping, raping and strangling Carlie Brucia, an 11-year-old Sarasota girl whose abduction was captured on video, was set to be sentenced on Monday.

Joseph Smith was found guilty in November.

Brucia was grabbed behind a car wash as she was walking home from a friend's house. Her abduction was captured by a security camera and aired by TV stations around the world.

Her body was found on the grounds of a nearby church four days later.

The jury recommended that Smith be sentenced to death.

His lawyer is asking for life in prison without parole. He argues that Smith was drug-addicted and out of control when he committed the crime.

Smith was on probation on a drug conviction at the time of the murder.
