An explosion and fire ripped through a liquid waste treatment facility Thursday, injuring at least five people and sending smoke billowing across highways.

Smoke could be seen miles from the site, near the city’s main postal facility south of downtown Cleveland, and aerial news video showed smoke pouring through gaping holes in the roof of a building surrounded by upright containers. The smoke appeared to taper off within an hour of the first report of the blast.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the explosion.

The injured were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, and four were admitted to the burn unit, spokeswoman Luzon Thomas said. She had no immediate information on the severity of the injuries.
