American Airlines and Northwest Airlines boosted airfares for some trans-Atlantic flights, matching the move rival Delta Air Lines announced Thursday. Carriers are charging more in an attempt to offset soaring fuel costs.

The airline industry has been battered by soaring fuel prices and low-fare competition that makes it hard for carriers to raise fares. In the last year, however, major airlines have been implemented several lasting fare hikes and surcharges.

Delta, the nation’s third-largest carrier, said Thursday it is raising passenger surcharges on trans-Atlantic flights originating in the United States and South America by $10 each way because of high fuel prices.

The increase for tickets purchased on or after Thursday is for travel for passengers originating their flights in the Western Hemisphere, except Canada and Mexico, and heading to Delta’s trans-Atlantic markets.

The surcharge for travel originating in Italy will increase $12.68 based on Thursday’s conversion rate for the euro.

Tickets purchased prior to Thursday for trans-Atlantic travel in the future are not affected by the changes, the Atlanta-based airline said.
