In 1850, the 12th president of the United States, Zachary Taylor, died after serving only 16 months of his term.

Five years ago: A divided court in Chile ruled that General Augusto Pinochet could not be tried on human rights charges because of his deteriorating health and mental condition, a ruling that effectively brought the 85-year-old former dictator’s legal troubles to an end. Wild-card entrant Goran Ivanisevic (ee-van-EE’-seh-vihch) won the men’s title at Wimbledon by beating Patrick Rafter 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7.

One year ago: A purported Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan said the group had beheaded a missing American commando, but he offered no proof and the U-S military said it was still searching for the Navy SEAL. (The body of the commando was found the next day.) A panda cub, later named Tai Shan (ty shawn), was born at the National Zoo in Washington.
