A roadside bomb blast killed a Peruvian soldier attached to the Spanish military Saturday and wounded four other NATO troops in western Afghanistan, the Spanish Defense Ministry said.

The soldiers were patrolling in an armored convoy east of the western city of Farah after sunset when their vehicles were struck by an explosive device, said Maj. Ian Clooney, spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

Clooney declined to reveal the troops' nationalities, but the Spanish Defense Ministry said the slain soldier was from Peru and had been serving with Spanish forces under an agreement allowing Peruvians with Spanish ancestry to form part of its forces.

The ministry did not immediately specify the nationalities of the four wounded soldiers, who are believed to be in stable conditions.
