Every Kuwaiti citizen will get a $694 gift from the government after parliament on Monday unanimously backed the one-time payout.
The cabinet announced the plan earlier this month, saying it was to help Kuwaitis with "life's expenses." It is not the first time such a payment has been made.
The ruler of this oil-rich state, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, ordered the payout for Kuwait's one million citizens — regardless of age. It will cost a total of $694 million.
Foreign workers, who make up the rest of Kuwait's population of 3 million, do not get the payment.
