An unidentified assailant opened fire in a crowded nightclub in Providence early Monday morning, killing one person and wounding two others, police said.

One person, the city’s 11th homicide victim this year, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. The two wounded at Club Pulse were in stable condition, according to a statement released by the Providence Police Department.

Police have made no arrests. Officers are withholding the victims’ identities pending notification of next of kin, according to the statement.

Detectives were combing the crime scene Monday to figure out what led to the shooting, the motive for the attack and who may be involved.

The violent incident is not the first at the club.

In March 2005, a gunman fired six shots toward a small group standing outside the club’s entrance — including three police officers called to the scene to help deal with a disturbance.

In November 2005, the Board of Licenses fined the club $1,500 for failing to prevent violence when a fight began on the dance floor, then moved to the parking lot.
