Riots broke out in the southern Sri Lankan port city of Galle on Wednesday after suspected Tamil Tiger rebels launched a suicide raid on a naval base there, residents and police said.

Shops belonging to the minority Tamil community in the city were being targeted by the majority Sinhalese, they said. "We have instructed the police to bring it under control," one officer said, adding that a curfew had been imposed.

At least three rebels on an apparent suicide mission were killed by troops when they attacked the naval base.
