A strong earthquake with 6.3 magnitude struck the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Center said there was no threat of a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami but it said earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis.
The temblor, which occurred at 12:38 p.m. EST Tuesday, or 3:38 a.m. local time Wednesday, was centered about 340 miles northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, USGS said.
