The ferocious winds that knocked out power to thousands and toppled trees into homes across Snohomish County prompted County Executive Aaron Reardon to declare a state of emergency Friday afternoon.

"By declaring a state of emergency, we will be able to respond more quickly and efficiently to those in need of county services," Reardon said. "A state of emergency declaration allows us to seek federal reimbursement of these damages in the event that we receive another presidential declaration."

It was just this week that President Bush declared the county among the places eligible for federal disaster aid for damages from the Election Day floods.

Record-high winds Thursday night and Friday morning led to widespread power outages and damage to homes and businesses across the region.

Reardon visited the south and southeast parts of the county, which were the hardest hit areas, executive staff Edwina Elcox said. He also went to view the previously flooded areas to see how they were affected.
