A crowded car of an Indonesian passenger train derailed and plunged into a dry river bed early Tuesday morning, killing five people and leaving dozens of others with mostly minor injuries, police said.

A 3-year-old child was among those who died in the accident near the Central Javanese town of Purokerto, said police Sgt. Sunaryro.

Some of the injured were in other cars and were hurt when the train came to jolting halt, said the official, who goes by a single name.

The train was traveling from the town of Solo to the capital, Jakarta, Sunaryro said.

Train accidents are common on Indonesia’s aging railway network, especially at crossings. It is not uncommon for economy class carriages to carry up to 200 people.
