A passenger bus collided head-on with a truck in northern India on Wednesday, killing at least 22 people and injuring 23, a government official said.

Thirteen of the 23 hospitalized were in critical condition, said Vipin Mishra, a spokesman for state home department.

The accident occurred near Budaun, a town 180 miles southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

The bus driver was among the dead, Mohan said, adding that all the victims were bus passengers. Fifteen died at the scene and the other seven succumbed to injuries after being hospitalized, he said.

Road accidents due to reckless driving, aging vehicles and bad roads are common in India.
