NEW YORK — For just the fourth time in its history, a 90-year-old fountain that sprays up from the Central Park reservoir is gushing again.
The fountain was reactivated Monday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the elaborate system of tunnels and reservoirs that brings drinking water from the Catskill Mountains to the city.
"It's a wonderful part of New York City," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said about the reservoir at a news conference.
The fountain is situated on the southwest side of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, which was named in memory of the former first lady in 1994. Onassis, like countless others, enjoyed walking and jogging around its 1.6-mile perimeter.
Famous backdrops
City officials said the fountain was last activated for a few months in 2003 to mark the 150th anniversary of Central Park, and before that in 1998.
The fountain has served as a backdrop in many television shows and films, including "Marathon Man," "The Brothers McMullen" and some Woody Allen classics.
City officials said it will be turned on at least through the fall, and will be illuminated at night.
