More women opting for preventive mastectomy - but should they be?

Rates of women who are opting for preventive mastectomies, such as Angeline Jolie, have increased by an estimated 50 percent in recent years, experts say. But many doctors are puzzled because the operation doesn't carry a 100 percent guarantee, it's major surgery -- and women have other options, from a once-a-day pill to careful monitoring.

"My personal goal is to look as good as I can, for as long as I can," writes Anna of Fenton, Mich., who's tried liposuction, Botox and a tummy tuck, among other things.

Still, some readers tout the effects of a good, old-fashioned diet-and-exercise combination.

"The most extensive thing I did to lose weight was a diet that I have been on for more than a year," writes Chris of Camden, N.Y. "It's amazing how it's 'melted my fat' and made me svelte and healthier."

I was feeling insecure about my weight gain. My entire life I was a gym rat, and now I did not have time for the gym. I read about Lipodisolve, and thought it was an easy fix to my problem. The shots were extremely painful, but I suffered through them, thinking I was going to look like my old self. After all was said and done I gained weight during the shots. I am still paying for the stupid shots, serves me right for trying to take the easy route when it comes to my health. I now work out and eat better. I have now lost 24 pounds the right way.

I had gastric bypass surgery three and a half years ago. I lost nearly half of my body weight and look and feel fabulous!
— Janet, Lawrenceville, N.J.

I had liposuction done with great results on my love handles and abs. I had Lipodissolve done on my upper stomach with zero results. I had the recommended four series of treatments, 40 shots each time and lost nothing except a good sum of money.
— Debby, Oak Creek, Wis.

I tried Lipodissolve and had extreme side effects on just one treatment: excessive bleeding where the shot was given, nausea, three times returned to doctor within 12 hours to stop internal bleeding, a 10 pain number, lumping flesh in spots. There's more, but all in all, I'll keep my fat or have a tummy tuck.

I am 27 years old, and about six months ago I did the Lipodissolve treatments. My main target was my abs and love handles. ... I was swollen so bad the next day, was very sore and had a hard time moving around. I thought this was just normal side effects. So about four weeks later I went in for my second treatment. ... I was fine when I left but about two hours after the treatment I was eating at a restaurant and started to feel very sick. I almost passed out, my friends carried me to the restroom where I laid on the floor. I started throwing up and having a bowel movement, very cold clammy sweats. They begged me to let them call 911. I kept telling them it was the Lipodissolve treatment I had done that day. We made it home I went straight to bed still throwing up. The second day I was bound to the bed; I was in so much pain, I couldn't even move. I had to have help to make it to the bathroom. I was swollen; I looked like I was six months pregnant. This went on for a week with awful pain, being sore I could hardly walk, having constant bowel movements, and throwing up. I didn't lose any inches, I am left with dead fatty tissue, I am very numb in places. It was a waste of my money and everything I had to go through was not worth one cent of it.

I have had a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast up-lift, eye-lid uplift, botox and laser treatment on my face. My results were all promising. I would recommend them to others if they have the opportunity. ... When I have extra money available I will treat myself again.
— Anna, Fenton, Mich.

Americans should try this exercise and healthy diet thing. Works wonders.
— Guermo, Aspen, Colo.

I have tried and had success with Lipodissolve. I have had two body parts treated and am planning on going in for my third!
— Cynthia, Ashburn, Va.

In 2004, at age 39, I had liposuction of my belly fat and breast augmentation at the same time. For me, It was a life-long dream come true! I hated my body for as long as I can remember prior to the cosmetic surgery. Now, more than eight years later, I still think it was the best decision I ever made! It gave me self-confidence that I had never known before. Prior to my cosmetic surgery, I was afraid that my ugly body would scare away any potential lover or partner, so I turned off the lights or kept my shirt on until I was "safe."
— Sondra, Medford, Ore.

There is no magic bullet here and one must practice self control, not get miracle cures while eating voraciously.
— Chris, Camden, N.Y.

I tried lipodissolve to remove a small amount of fat from my back, just below my bra. I've lost 2 inches and my clothes fit so much better. This has really done a lot for my self esteem!
— Krista, Bethesda, Md.

This new Lipolysis injections seems to be a result of image vs health. It has by passed the testing phase and it's makers are using the desperate and young as the testing fields. People are being told it's negligent, criminal to be fat now-a-days and people are believing this crap. Just another person trying to make some money off the the public.
