The Ford Foundation, the nation’s second-largest private philanthropy, picked a consultant who specializes in the effects of new technology on media and society as its next president.

Luis Ubinas, a director at McKinsey & Company, will take over the presidency in January, when Susan V. Berresford retires, the foundation announced Tuesday. Berresford has held the post since 1996.

At McKinsey, Ubinas has worked with traditional media companies responding to the effects of new media, and with emerging technology companies on the introduction of new media services. He also has advised senior nonprofit managers and serves on boards of several regional and national nonprofit organizations.

Ubinas will become the ninth president in the Ford Foundation’s 70-year history.
