Fake fur has really gone to the dogs

First there were pet spas featuring puppy pedicures, so we should not be surprised that now dog lovers everywhere can make Fido more fashionable with celebrity-styled dog wigs.

The brainchild of Hollywood stylist Ruth Regina, the canine toupees are called Wiggles, and come in variety of shapes and sizes to accessorize the tiniest chihuahua to greatest dane.

Quoted in this week's New York Daily News, Regina said: "When I saw dogs in tiaras and opera clothes and workout clothes and jewelry being carried around in $7,000 alligator bags and Chanels, I said, 'Oh, why not a wig for a dog?'" Styles include coiffures modeled after Shirley Temple, Posh Spice, the Beatles, and even Donald Trump's famous — or is that infamous? — comb-over.

However, Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, executive vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals isn't so keen on the idea. He told the News that the wigs could lead to allergic reactions, or even worse, they could getting tangled on something or the dog itself, causing injury.

Regina countered that her custom-designed wigs — which she said cost up to $29.95 — are safe for Spot. "I made sure that the ears would come out, that it would fit comfortably under and around the head, and that it would weigh as light as a feather," she was quoted as saying.

And at least now you may be able to convince your best friend to go out for a walk even if he's having a bad fur day.

'Idol' musical voted off
A musical inspired by the hit reality television show "American Idol" has been voted off the stage in New York — closing one day after officially opening off Broadway.

"Idol: The Musical," touted as a "satirical musical comedy that focuses on the outrageous and delusional fan base of the hit television show," closed on Monday after two casts, 47 preview performances and one regular show.

Producer Todd Ellis said in a statement that he closed the production "due to a lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources."

A musical that pokes fun at the tens of millions of "Idol" fans notwithstanding, maybe the closing was also because couldn't find any actors that could sing as well as Sanjaya.

Pretty in pizza
Forget the nip and tuck, just give us a slice: An "anti-wrinkle" pizza has been created by a nutritionist in southern Italy.

According to the La Stampa newspaper, the "primula" pie is made up of three times the amount of fiber found in traditional pizza as its crust uses wholemeal flour, and also contains more magnesium and iron.

Eight vegetables reportedly contribute to the anti-oxidant effects against aging — tomatoes, arugula, garlic, zucchini, basil, mushrooms, carrots and spinach.

The formula was devised by Eugenio Luigi Iorio, a nutritionist and biochemist at the University of Naples, with the help of Cosimo Mogavero, owner of a local restaurant called Fabbrica dei Sapor (The Taste Factory).

Pope Benedict XVI apparently loves the "anti-age" pizza, according to the newspaper. He reportedly happily consumed one of the pies during a party for the Vatican Guards catered by Mogavero.

We think the Holy Father shares in our prayers for the additional creation of a heart-healthy lasagna.
