A former elementary school vice principal was sentenced to death Thursday for the brutal murders of his wife, three small children and mother-in-law.

Vincent Brothers, 45, was convicted in May of five counts of first-degree murder for the July 2003 slayings.

Prosecutors said Brothers first flew to the Midwest to establish an alibi, then drove more than 2,000 miles back to Bakersfield in a rental car to kill his family. The victims were shot and stabbed to death in their home shortly after they returned from church.

Brothers had been a well-respected mentor in Bakersfield. Kern County Superior Court Judge Michael Bush also rejected a motion for a new trial Thursday.
