A bus carrying Hindu pilgrims fell into a river Thursday in a remote part of northern India, killing at least 41 people, the Press Trust of India reported.

The accident took place at Vishnuprayag, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state, when the driver of the bus, which was carrying 45 passengers, lost control after hitting a boulder, PTI said, quoting unidentified police sources.

The bus fell into the swirling waters of the Alaknanda, a tributary of the Ganges River, the report said, adding that most passengers died at the scene and rescue workers had retrieved 41 bodies.
