Officials in Ecuador are preparing to begin rescue efforts as at least 60 miners are trapped underground because of an explosion in a gold mine.

It's not clear how many miners were injured in the blast, and officials have told local media that it's not clear what caused the explosion.

The country's interior minister says the mine was run by a local cooperative with "limited safety."
