Ten Algerians have been killed in recent days during torrential rains and floods that hit parts of the North African nation, civil defense officials said Wednesday.

Several of those who died in the rains since Saturday were killed when homes, walls and a bridge collapsed.

The latest victims were three women in the town of El-Hamri, near the northern coastal city of Oran, who were trapped in a house that caved in Wednesday, Algeria's civil defense authorities said.

Several other victims were children, including an 8-year-old who died from his injuries at a hospital after he was pulled from the wreckage of a fallen wall in the capital of Algiers.

The rains have hit the country's central and western regions. In the capital alone, authorities have counted 29 homes and walls that collapsed, as well as 29 mudslides, according to a local crisis unit.

Algeria's weather service warned Wednesday that storms could continue to hit the country for the next two days.
