Two inmates escaped when they walked away from their prison work crew and later may have robbed two hunters of their guns, authorities said Thursday.

Cloman Smith and Jesse McCrobie escaped from a work crew at a poultry house Wednesday afternoon, state Department of Correction spokesman Keith Acree said.

Authorities believe Smith and McCrobie then robbed two hunters in Northampton County late that night, Acree said. They took two rifles, a handgun, cash and a 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck, authorities said.

Smith, 30, is serving a maximum prison sentence of 12 years and five months as a habitual felon. McCrobie, 27, is serving a prison sentence of more than three years for larceny, breaking and entering and other charges.

Both were being held at the minimum security Tillery Correctional Center.
