The New York University Medical Center said Wednesday it will use a $15 million gift from a Holocaust refugee to fund research, patient care and student support.

The center said it also will dedicate a garden to the donor, Charlotte Fleck, who died in June 2005.

The former Charlotte Weinstock spent her childhood in Nuremberg and lost her parents and sister in the Holocaust. Fleck's husband, Henry, also was a German refugee. She was involved in his business, Fleck Brothers, which sold framed prints to hotels and department stores.

Amid their success, Fleck was dedicated to saving money, and rarely allowed herself luxuries.

Both husband and wife were treated at NYU Medical Center over the years.
