Off-season national park stays, from $69

When the temperatures drop, so do the nightly rates at lodges in Canyon de Chelly, Yellowstone, and Zion, where you can ski, snowmobile, hike, and explore natural wonders and Anasazi ruins.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Ariz., from $69 per couple
Thunderbird Lodge, whose 73 rustic rooms have Navajo paintings and woven bedspreads, is slashing its rates by up to 43 percent off those in the summer high season. Rooms start at $63 for a single, $69 for a double, $75 for a triple, and $81 for a quad. Continental breakfast is included, as is a 10 percent discount at the gift shop and 10 percent off canyon tours for guests who stay on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday night. The roughly three-hour tours by six-wheel drive, with stops at Anasazi ruins, are $41 for adults and $31.50 for kids 12 and under.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., from $78 per couple
The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, both situated within Yellowstone, have low winter rates, starting at $78 for a room without a private bathroom ($105 with a bathroom) at Mammoth, and from $87 for a frontier cabin with a bathroom at the Snow Lodge. Note that in winter, only Mammoth is accessible by car; most transportation within the park is limited to snowmobiles and enclosed snow coaches. Xanterra, which owns the lodges, runs tours of Yellowstone by snowmobile and offers ski and snowshoe rentals. Tours start at $200 for two people and at $185 for one person. Ski and ice-skating packages are also available.

Details: Taxes are an additional 6 percent at the Snow Lodge and 9 percent at Mammoth. Breakfast is not included.

Zion National Park, Utah, from $81 per couple
The Zion in Winter promotion offers discounted rates for stays at Xanterra's Zion Lodge, which has 81 rooms, 40 cabins, a restaurant, a café, and a gift shop. Parking is free, and there's easy access to hiking (and horseback-riding) trails, most of which remain open through the winter. Nightly rates start at $81 for a standard motel room, $91 for a Western cabin, and $111 for a suite. Continental breakfast is included.

When: Sun.-Thurs., through Mar. 13, 2008; add $10 per night for weekend nights. Blackout dates: Dec. 31, 2007, and Feb. 14, 2008.
