A gunman opened fire at a bank Wednesday, wounding one person before fleeing, police said. Eight schools were locked down while police searched for the suspect, and a car crash that happened minutes later was believed to be connected to the robbery.

Police had one person in custody and were searching for another. It wasn’t clear if any money was taken, authorities said.

Police identified the shooting victim as Felix Sambuco, a 22-year veteran and battalion chief of the Waterbury Fire Department. He was shot in the right leg and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, NBC affiliate WVIT reported.

Sambuco was off duty at the time, police said.

Minutes after the robbery, a car matching a description of one that fled the scene was involved in an accident on a nearby highway, said state police Lt. J. Paul Vance. Police were searching for one man who fled from the car.
