Why it's a deal: The lowest round-trip fare between L.A and Papeete, Tahiti, in early May, according to a recent SideStep search, was $1,062 (Air Tahiti Nui), including estimated taxes. In comparison, the Air Tahiti Nui package starts at $1,091 ($999 + $92 taxes). So, for $29 more, the package covers your airfare as well as the three-night stay, breakfast daily, and hotel taxes.
Trip details: The Tahiti Quick Getaways Package, offered through Pleasant Holidays, includes round-trip nonstop airfare on Air Tahiti Nui to Papeete (about eight and a half hours) and three nights' accommodations in a mountain-view room at the Sofitel Tahiti Resort, about two miles from the airport. Among the facilities are an outdoor swimming pool, a golf driving range, two tennis courts, two restaurants, and a bar.
The recently refurbished resort lies on the island's west coast by Tahiti's only natural white-sand beach. The 216 rooms open to balconies and have cushion-covered daybeds. They're decorated with bright colors and bold patterns inspired by 19th-century French artist Paul Gauguin, who spent the last 12 years of his life in Tahiti. Each room features a rain-style shower, a plasma-screen satellite TV, and Wi-Fi. While the package includes rooms with mountain views, you can upgrade to a room that overlooks the lagoon for $145 per person or to a suite for $320 per person.
Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia and a major shopping hub, is a few minutes' drive (about four miles) from the resort. At Le Marché, a busy open-air market, you'll find everything from fresh meat and produce to exotic textiles, wood carvings, and colorful trinkets.
There are several museums worth a visit, including the Gauguin Museum, the Pearl Museum, and the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands. If time allows, stop by the vibrant Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens and the Mataoa Garden.
If you wish to extend your stay, you can add an extra night for $340 per room. But please note that this package limits trip extensions to one night only.
