The deal
The South American continent is calling with low prices! For those of you who want to head down south for a uniquely exotic voyage, we’ve scoured three excellent cruise specials to South America. Discounts run up to 57 percent, with prices starting at only $999 for a 14-night odyssey aboard Norwegian Sun next December.

Sail Chilean fjords with Norwegian
During next winter, Norwegian Sun kicks off its season with a two-week South American odyssey. The first departure of this voyage, on December 7, is now reduced in price by 57 percent! Inside cabins are selling for $999; oceanview units go for $1,199. On this 14-night cruise, the ship departs from Argentina’s capital of Buenos Aires toward the Chilean port city of Valparaiso. En route, it visits Uruguay’s capital of Montevideo; Port Stanley on the Falkland Islands; plus several stops in Patagonia. Those include Puerto Madryn and Ushuaia in Argentina; and Punta Arenas, Puerto Chacabuco and Puerto Montt in Chile. Six entire days at sea are also included.

Cruise the Americas with Holland America
Another fantastic South America deal is on offer by Orbitz: a 22-night odyssey with Holland America at a discount of 36 percent off rack rates! Departing next November from San Diego aboard Amsterdam, this epic voyage takes a number of highlights of the Americas for $1,799 in an inside or oceanview cabin. In Central America, those include Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Huatulco, and Puerto Chiapas in Mexico; Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala; Costa Rica’s Puntarenas; and Fuerte Amador in Panama. On the South American continent, the ship visits Manta, Ecuador; Callao (Lima) and General San Martin in Peru; and Arica, Coquimbo and Valparaiso (Santiago) in Chile.

South America aboard Carnival Splendor
In February 2009, Carnival’s brand-new Splendor does a unique circuit around South America. This 14-night sailing from Argentina’s Buenos Aires to Valparaiso (Santiago) in Chile is now discounted by 51 percent off rack rates. Inside cabins on this journey are selling at only $1,599; oceanview units go for $2,299; while balconied staterooms cost $2,549. Ports of call are the same as in the Norwegian cruise we’ve outlined above, with additional cruising time around Cape Horn, the Beagle Channel, and around the Chilean fjords. Carnival Splendor hits high seas for its inaugural cruise this July; it will offer Carnival's first series of South America sailings.

The dollars
The rates above are listed per person, based on double occupancy. The cost covers onboard accommodations, meals and entertainment, as well as port charges. You’ll just have to dish out extra for government taxes and fees, as well as any shore excursions you may decide to take.

The catch
Airfare to the Southern Hemisphere is a pricey affair.
