A gunman went on a 20-minute shooting rampage Thursday through his village near the northern city of Tuzla, killing six people — all of them relatives, police said.

Police arrested the suspect, Tomislav Petrovic, 45, when he stopped to reload his pistol, officials said.

Petrovic allegedly started his shooting spree around 6 a.m. by killing three relatives at their homes. He then boarded a bus and killed three others — also family members — who were on their way to work, and wounded the bus driver, police spokesman Miralem Malkic said.

The teenage son of one victim said he and his sister climbed out the back window of their house and hid at a neighbor's home when they heard the gunfire. Ranko Petrovic said he saw his father lying dead on the bus and the gunman reloading his weapon.

He said Petrovic continued walking around the village firing his gun.

"He was killing anybody he could see," Ranko Petrovic, 17, told The Associated Press. "He killed innocent people."

Search for motive
Police moved in to arrest the gunman when he stopped to reload. Malkic said the motive for the shootings was not clear.

He said the victims all were cousins of the alleged gunman. The bus driver was expected to survive.

Villagers described Petrovic, a married man with two children, as argumentative and aggressive but could not say what triggered the shootings.

The suspect's sister-in-law, Ruza Andric, told the AP that her sister phoned Wednesday evening saying Petrovic was threatening her and that she did not know how to get out of the house.

The dead were identified as Mijo and Kaja Petrovic; Niko and Kata Petrovic; and Ivo and Dragica Markanovic.
