Searchers on Thursday found an adult and 14 children some 19 hours after they were reported missing during a school outing in the Gila National Forest in southwestern New Mexico.

State police Lt. Eric Garcia said they were en route back to a base camp.

Garcia said 15 children and two adults went on a hiking trip Wednesday and all but two in the group failed to return by the afternoon.

Search and rescue teams, some on horseback, and National Guard quick response teams looked for the hikers. State police and U.S. Border Patrol aircraft also were involved.

The group was from a charter school in Silver City.
