The deal
If sky-high airfares to Europe forced you to forgo a summer visit to the Old World, there's hope on the horizon for fall. The first batch of autumn fare sales to European capitals like London and Paris have appeared, with one-way fares from just $230 — easily up to 40 percent off peak summer highs. You'll just need to act fast — most of these new deals expire next week.
$230+: Sweeping Europe sale on Lufthansa (each-way) — expires Aug. 20
Lufthansa’s huge European sale, featuring fares from just $230 one-way ($459 roundtrip), is understandably a real attention-grabber. Travelers can lock in low rates to Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Munich, Rome, and more for travel August 18 through October 26 — or book well in advance for flights between December 12 and December 24. A 7-day advance purchase is required.
$266+: Air France airfares to France & more Europe (one-way) — book by Aug. 20
Air France has just announced some excellent deals on fall travel to some of the top cities in France (and the rest of Europe). One-way fares start from just $266 one-way and include travel from Boston, Chicago, New York, and more U.S. cities to destinations like Paris, Nice, Lyon, Berlin, Barcelona, and beyond. Travel is valid September 1 through October 29 and requires a 7-day advance purchase.
$279+: London Virgin Atlantic fares from top U.S. cities (one-way) — ends Aug. 20
Lift off to London this fall without having to lift too much from your wallet, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic’s tempting fall and winter fares from just $279 each-way. Travel is valid now through March 22, 2009, with the lowest sale fares available after October 23. A 7-day advance booking is required.
$329+: Fall fares to Copenhagen on SAS (one-way) — expires Aug. 20
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has posted tempting sale fares to Copenhagen for travel this fall and winter. The promotion’s lowest fare of $329 one-way is valid for departures from New York; departures from other cities, including DC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Tampa, are available at slightly higher rates. Travel is valid for weekday departures September 1, 2008 through March 29, 2009.
$746+: Amsterdam in biz class on OpenSkies (one-way) – book by Aug. 21
New premium airline OpenSkies (operated by British Airways) is expanding its Paris-only service to include an Amsterdam route via New York City. Fly in style in PREM+ class from just $746 each-way for travel after October 15, and enjoy on-board perks like seats that recline to a pitch of 140° and personal power ports, all at rates comparable to those in economy class on the same route during the summer high season.
The catch
While you’ll certainly save a few bucks on airfare, you’ll still need to go head to head with the mighty Euro once you touch down.
