A woman has given birth in the international arrivals terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the 28-year-old Gambian woman had earlier arrived from the West African nation to apply for asylum in the United States.

Fatou Jaw and her three children were awaiting processing when she went into labor and gave birth to a boy before paramedics could arrive. Mother and son went to Jamaica Hospital where a spokesman says both are well.

Jaw's husband had earlier received U.S. asylum and was waiting for his family at the airport when his son was born.

The hospital spokesman says the couple are still deciding on a first name but had chosen their new son's middle name: JFK.
