Croatian media reported Thursday that a prominent Croatian journalist and a colleague were killed by a bomb planted under his car in downtown Zagreb.

Ivo Pukanic, 47, was the owner and editor-in-chief of the No. 2 political weekly in Croatia, Nacional. His media house also published several other newspapers.

Croatian state-run TV, the state news agency and two private television stations said Pukanic's Lexus exploded in front of his office on Thursday evening. They showed footage of a burned-out car and two covered bodies.

Krunoslav Borovec, a senior national police official, told the AP that police cannot yet confirm the deaths.

Nacional was an investigative paper, but Pukanic also was often criticized for alleged connections with politicians and organized crime.
