Authorities said a train smashed into a sedan that drove into its path in central Florida, launching the car into the air and killing three.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Miller said two men and one woman in the car died Friday when the Amtrak train hit it around 7 p.m. in Orlando. Their names have not been released.

A fourth occupant of the car was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said none of the 185 passengers or crew on the train were hurt. The Florida Highway Patrol said the car drove past the crossing's lowered gates and into the train's path.

Authorities said the impact launched the car into the air, and it landed about 200 feet away.
