A powerful magnitude 7 temblor struck near New Zealand's Kermadec Islands on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Service Web site reported.

The site said there was no immediate threat of a major tsunami from the quake, which struck at 6:24 p.m. local time. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The remote islands are home to a large marine reserve and lie about 620 miles northeast of New Zealand's capital, Auckland.
