David Kellum

Jan. 2

Congratulations to David Kellum, who submitted the top-rated image in this week’s It’s A Snap travel photo contest.

Kellum captured a stunning sunset photo just outside his recently purchased home in Yakima, Wash. The 59-year-old truck driver is a former professional photographer, but snapped this shot with an “older” 8.1-pixel Polaroid digital pocket camera. “Nothing fancy – no bells or whistles,” Kellum said.

Kellum was working on some home repairs in early December. “As I was leaving, I noticed the sky was starting to get strange, so I snapped a couple of photos.”

Kellum worked as a photographer for the New England Patriots (1977-1979), and photographed Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush – all of the living former presidents of the day – back in 1993.

“I couldn’t get anyone to buy my pictures – I basically gave up being a pro in ’93.”

He credits Colin Rankin – his good friend and class valedictorian at New Mexico’s Alamogordo High School in 1968 – for becoming a photographer in the first place.

Kellum said he drives trucks because he wants to. “I get to see the sun in San Diego and snow in Seattle,” he said, referring to the unprecedented snowstorm that hit the Pacific Northwest late last year.
