There have been all kinds of predictions about what the travel industry will be like in 2009, but one thing is for sure, the airline industry has been kicking it off with a bang. Now that gas prices have dropped dramatically, airlines have a little more breathing room to offer lower prices. Major airlines like United, Continental, JetBlue and American have all launched New Year’s fare sales with rates starting as low as $39 one-way. If your New Year’s resolution is to save some serious cash, then why not strike when the iron is hot and book your travel early this year.

Fares from Continental Airlines from $39
Continental posts the following one-way sample fares starting from $39. There is no expiry date, however they are subject to change.

  • San Antonio-Houston $39
  • Cleveland-Chicago $59
  • Washington DC-New York $64
  • And more

Discount JetBlue fares from $39
JetBlue announced a fare sale starting from $39 that ends January 14. One-way sample fares include:

  • Long Beach-Las Vegas $39
  • West Palm Beach and Boston: $89
  • Salt Lake City and Long Beach: $59
  • New York to Charlotte: $49

$39 American Airlines fares
American Airlines is also in on the $39 action, and has posted the following rates, with travel commencing January 14 through March 4.

$55 United Airlines fares
United Airlines is offering one-way fares starting from $55 on select travel periods through April 30. Travel must be booked by January 16. Sample fares include:
